Rusted Rail once again has sent us some of his greetings cards posing as musical implements, this one by CWK Joynes - "LHR Twins". The opener sounds like a Mandolin is being mauled (lovingly) by talented fingers whilst zither, piano, cello & musicbox are employed in varying degrees of audibility. It gets quicker to the point where you could possibly do a spindly Irish Jig to it. Amazing stuff! 'Lay You Down O My Brother' is of the Rose/Parr/Blackshaw/Cam Deas school, an hypnotic steel guitar mantra that never fails to thrill. There's some traditional aspect to it you should read about in the insert or press if yr interested! A plaintive acoustic finishes the set, reminding me of old Django R, an evergreen influence for sure. This Cambridge boy sure knows his way around the strings, long may his precious pinkies play on!Rusted Rail is pleased to announce the release of “LHR Twins”, an EP by Anglo-Naive and Contemporary Parlour Guitarist CWK Joynes. The Cambridge resident has homespun three pieces which he describes here:
‘I Love You Hanny Fuji’: This recording features Babygrand on zither, prepared piano, cello and music box. It is possible that the lady whose name appears in the title of this tune may reside in or around the town of 16 Mile, on the railway between Asmara and Nefasit. The version presented here uses an extended and alternative mix to those appearing elsewhere.
Lay You Down O My Brother: This tune draws in part on a traditional spiritual, fragments of which were first encountered in recordings by The Grateful Dead (Warner Bros Records K66002) and, later, The Incredible String Band (Elektra EUK 258). Further elements are ghosted from Abbess Hildegard of Bingen’s sequence or hymn ‘Columba Aspexit’ (Hyperion CDA66039). The version presented here was recorded using the Dobro DW-45.
The Autumn Leaves of Red and Gold (Source: Mercer): Here thanks to Chris Playford, some six or seven years on. The version presented here largely comprises of solo guitar.
This 3inch hand-stamped EP is housed in a handmade sleeve and is limited to 94 copies!
