Apparently Philadelphia's The Capitol Years have done a bit of musical overtime performing as Daniel Johnston's backing band recently, which is a bit of an honour I guess. On 'You Can Stay Here' they pump out an woozy, effortless sort of FM radio rock that I can imagine fans of bands like Semisonic being into. The cool dudes, in other words. CD and 7" on SOE.The soaring follow-up release to Radcliffe and Maconie’s BBC Radio 2 Single of the Week, “Revolutions”, “You Can Stay There” is sure to attract even more devotees to Philadelphia’s shape-shifting pop auteurs.
Lead singer, songwriter and producer Shai, Son of Eli, described composing “You Can There There” in a recent interview:
“It was a humble attempt to write my own ‘Needle in the Camel’s Eye’ (the classic Brian Eno tune), and you can probably hear a homage in the first vocal melody, only you have to play it backwards Regardless, I went into it thinking Brian Eno but somehow ended up with a prototypical Guided By Voices song.”
Comparisons and inspirations aside, the band has crafted a blistering pop nugget that seems to eclipse most cookie cutter tunes stumbling out of your radio.
The Capitol Years began as a bedroom pop experiment, morphed into a bombastic live band of Philadelphian song-obsessed noisemakers, and today continues as one of the city's most beloved groups. With critically embraced albums that veer from lush, melodic harmonies to cacophonous noise-fests, Shai, Son of Eli and The Capitol Years have amassed a notable, genre-bending catalogue of records, many of which have appeared regularly on US critics' "best of" lists.
The band has shared the stage with many other talented artists including the Pixies, who hand-picked the band to open their reunion tour, and the legendary Daniel Johnston who had The Capitol Years support him on a US tour in 2008 and perform as his backing band.
You Can Stay There is taken from the forthcoming album Dance Away The Terror.
