Helen In The Mirror by Red Stars Over Tokyo

The next thing I have for you is a long playing record by Red Stars Over Tokyo. This is on the Hot Hair label of Belgium. Speaking of Hot Hair someone told me the other day that they knew someone who used to burn their hair rather than cut it. Is this normal? I would have thought that a scissor would be easier.Anyway this is entitled 'Helen in the Mirror' and it is limited to 338 copies. We have the black vinyl ones. Its an interesting mix of neo classical piano music, failed techno and haunting Kompakt esque style minimal dub experiments. The piano stuff is particularly impressive as its stilted and halted giving it a much bigger emotional impact that some other neo classical stuff thats about which is far to serene and is just one candelabra away from Richard Clayderman territory. Certainly the best bits of Rachel's, Max Richter, Eluvium and Gareth S Brown are brought to mind. Theres also darker ambient passages which Brian thinks sounds like some early Dutch techno experimenters or even Yorkshires very own Human League (pre vocal). Overall I like this record as there seems to be a lot of love put into it, it crosses musical boundaries as if the artist is enjoying the thrill of creating his own music from a long held love of various unrelated musical genres. Like a little peek into someones private world.

“I started working on this record wanting to created the minimal techno vibe of Kompakt …..and failed.”
3rd 12” since last years debut, another collection of sounds influenced by drone Music, Electro/electronica,
fieldrecordings, 80ties synths, soundtrack, minimal techno… As with both previous releases, once again
recorded at home when the kids were at school
with Little use of loops and no laptop or sampler.
edition of 338 (121 clear, 109 marble and 108 black)
