Real estate write beautiful indie folk rock. 'Fake Blues' is the official u.k debut from the band and it's a beautifully simple sea shanty-esq melody with a relaxed vibe that reminds Brian of 'Egyptian reggae' by Mr. Jonathan Richmond. You may have noticed i've already reviewed the U.S version of this single but i thought we'd give it another go as the B-side 'Green River' is uk only exclusive. It's a loose Credence style jam with a saturated and strangely scatty vocal. The reverb makes it difficult to tell what's been said but it's a top little ditty anyhow's. Also worth mentioning......Real estate feature the talents of Matthew Mondanile, a.k.a Ducktails. I didn't know that, but now i do.The Garden State, known mostly for spawning Bruce Springsteen, Frank Sinatra, Kool & The Gang and Lauryn Hill amongst many others, seems to be a going through a resurgence of interest of late. The state that proclaims to “pump it’s fists, not it’s gas” - New Jersey, is also home to Real Estate, four high school friends in their early 20’s who release their debut UK single, ‘Fake Blues’, on Monday 20th July 2009 on Half Machine Records.
Real Estate, who released their acclaimed debut 7” (‘Suburban Beverage’) on US indie Underwater Peoples in February, are Martin Courtney on guitar and vocals (briefly of Titus Andronicus), Matthew Mondanile on guitar (who also records as Ducktails), Alex Bleeker on bass and Etienne Duguay (also of Predator Vision) on drums.
‘Fake Blues’ is the sound of a young band jamming along to Yo La Tengo, The Clean, Galaxie 500 and Grateful Dead VHS’ from the ‘80’s in their parents basements (literally). Whilst exclusive, UK only b-side ‘Green River’ is the sound of Credence swapping their swamp rock for The Embarrassment-esque lo-fi pop.
Real Estate release their debut album on US indie Woodsist (early home of the Vivian Girls, Crystal Stilts, Wavves, etc) soon.
