Lights - Rites

Rites by Lights

3...according to our on Fri 10 Jul, 2009.

First up something by someone called Lights. Its a CD called Rites and if it were a few years ago in the glory days when I could say what I like I would say it was shite(s). But now Obama is in and theres a new positivity in the world I have to be nice and find some things to recommend it. Ok then its on Drag City and in its better moments has the lovely lady harmonies of School of Seven Bells and the mixed up hazy pastoral progginess of Grizzly Bear. But just far too often they think going for the lengthy guitar solo option is a good idea. At one point theres a saxophone solo. Utter wankers. Yet there's portions of really interesting stuff in there. What a terrible mixed bag. The band seem to consist of three ladies - two of whom are quite pretty but their image is destroyed by a man who looks like a child molester.

Lights are a Brooklyn musical troupe that have shaped psychedelic mojo pop into a serpentine smoke
ring, floating over both New York’s forbidding urban scapes and the West Coast’s sunshine vibes.

Together, Sophia Knapp, Linnea Vedder and
Andy Macleod create Lights, a gang of outside /
insiders with a multicolored, multitrack mind.

Their songs are the lovechild of American
soul music, country, metal, psychedelic
rock, disco and new age.
