Ganglians - Monster Head Room

Monster Head Room by Ganglians

Another spiffing looking record here from Ganglians on Weird Forest. Our Business Lady has just been dribbling over the sleeve, hey it's on red vinyl too and comes with a 7". The Ganglians have that Beach Boy's harmony, summer pop thing going on, kinda like Panda Bear but devoid of all the weird druggy sounding effects. The recording sound on Monster Head Room is a lot cleaner than the more lo-fi album on Woodsist. These guys write some good songs and they just have something kinda sugary about them that brings a smile to my big Welsh head. There's lots of interesting little weird sounds occuring in the background too. Again, this is sold out at source.

Glee. See that’s a word I rarely party with in my codex but it’s just the one that I would subscribe to Ganglians. Everytime I see these chaps play I come away with a big old grin on my world-weary face. How do they do it? Well it’s the lightheartedness in their playing ... the angelic Wilson-esque vocal harmonies ... then from out of nowhere come those West African guitar stylings! And yet I can never pin down this band's sound ... not that that's a bad thing. In fact it’s always been a sure sign for me that the music’s doing something right. From the lazy day musings of To June to the monumental yarn Valient Brave. Jam this on your next road trip or on your back porch drinking an Arnold Palmer. This is a record for summertime if ever there was one. It’s pop music in the best sense of the word ... paramount and perennial. Hot on the heels of the recently released self titled Woodsist 12" and the split seven inch with their buds Eat Skull. The CD version of this album is available from Woodsist.

So good, initially was biased thinking it would be another Woodsist record, although I do love some of the label's stuff after a while it can get boring. This record instead is like a Beach Boys Smiley lost gem. Great!
