When Fackin' Keeler, our Yankrock guru from the Southern Plains teleflopped us up and started screeching maniacally about Grass Widow we thought for a minute he was having some kind of drugs withdrawal seizure. Then we realised he was referring to this San Franciscan lady group who number a Vivian Girls friendly 3 and specialise in a similar primal indie aesthetic. They're less concerned with smothering their spindly, addictive early-mid 80's inspired guitar rumble in Spectorish fuzz, taking a slightly wonky Raincoats route instead, but their songs are no less divinely executed & enchanting than the VGs. They also have an uncanny ability to recall early Stereolab & esoteric US weirdo pop bands such as Uncle Wiggly & Thinking Fellers Local 282. Drums are prone to burst out into driving exuberance, scruffy, majestic guitar lines spazzing out in all directions whilst the bass guitar just steadily bumbles along like a incredibly happy shaggy dog that's got 180 pairs of slippers just sat there waiting to be fetched & chewed. The vocals are hazy and cute but honestly, this ain't no 2nd/3rd generation Anglophile bandwagon jumper band or the latest new wave pastiche - they've got some thoroughly ace songs and aren't afraid to let things get a bit edgy. Every time I play this S/T debut it thrills me that little bit more. Oh yes, they're special these lasses, get in while you still can!!!!! Vinyl only.GRASS WIDOW's debut LP is Make A Mess Records' fourth release. This all-girl San Francisco trio borrows some of the aesthetic and sound from early art-punk bands like the Raincoats and blends it with their own unique style. Each song is vocally driven with intricate harmonies over strong melodies. For fans of Nodzzz, Brilliant Colors, Mika Miko, etc.
