· Domino re-release and remaster the four original albums from San Francisco
hardcore punks Flipper, with new liner notes from Nirvana bassist Krist
Novoselic, Melvins’ King Buzzo, and Henry Rollins.
· Flipper’s debut album ‘Generic’ is a must for any fans of noise, punk, rock or
hardcore music. At a time when all the early US hardcore bands like Black Flag
ripped along at 100 mph, Flipper slowed it right down and heavied it right up. The
album’s influence is undeniable. ‘Generic’ is deep. It can be bleak but there’s a
sense of humour too. Flipper romp with abandon throughout this milestone of rock
music. A work of such stature produced offspring; ‘Generic’ left a mark on Kurt
Cobain too. He took that work and mixed it with his talent for pop hooks and
Nirvana’s ‘In Utero’ was born.’ Krist Novoselic is even playing in Flipper’s current
incarnation.
· Follow up album ‘Gone Fishin’ drew Flipper’s devious, malevolent noise into
tighter focus, scraping away the haze of distorted atmospherics to emphasise the
muscular post-punk beast that lurked beneath. Check the amazing ‘Sacrifice’,
which rivals and maybe even betters some of the tracks on ‘Generic’.
· ‘Public Flipper Ltd’ is a double album of live performances recorded across
America between 1980 and 1985. Titled in sly response to Public Image
Limited, who had seemingly purloined ‘Generic’’s iconic sleeve design for their
own ‘Album’ (released earlier that year), ‘Public Flipper Limited’ is notable not
least for containing a rare recording, from Washington DC’s hardcore mecca The
9:30 Club, of Flipper’s only ‘punk’ song, the feral blank blast of ‘Brainwash’
which, at thirty or so seconds, lasts almost as long as Bruce Loose’s introductory
spiel.
· ‘Sex Bomb Baby’ wraps up this killer collection and is a collection of early singles
and B sides.
