Maiden Midst by Sequin Trails

'Maiden Midst' is a limited (eighty copies, yo that be well limited) release by Sequin Trails, a.k.a Janina Angel Bath from the heart of Psychedelic wonderland, California. Trust Golden Lab to stumble upon such a treat of an artist as Janina, they must spend all there time scouring the earth for unheard goodness and bringing it to the attention of the kids and for that you should thank them for doing all the hard work for you. Sequin Trails music is relatively chilled for Golden Lab, tastefully drone some riffage is accompanied by sweet, smooth saxophone workouts that sound rich in psychedelic heritage whilst also extenting a passing nod to traditional folk styles. Little phrases and shapes evolve from each tune, percussive elements come and go and new, unknown instruments occasionally pop in for a quick phrase or two then wonder of nonchalantly. Great for couch monging yo! Very good stuff with an awesome Golden Lab illustration and spray painted CD. Yes!!! Ta.

Janina Angel Bath's unabashed approach to cranking out sun-drenched, ecstatic drones overlaid by seedy saxophone and deep, almost Nico-esque vocals has us melting into our sofas. We came upon Sequin Trails through this here myspace, which is normally a bit too postmodern for us. But the fact that there was dayglo, facepaint and tonal honking involved really won us over. The recording is blown-out and buzzy and all the better for it. And it traverses muddily pulsating rhythms through to pure note elongation that zaps the senses and focuses the mind's eye, like listening to one's own tinnitus. This is so deep, it may be bottomless.

Out now, limited to 80 copies.
