The third installment in the Young Widows split 7" series on Temporary Residence has just jumped out of a box and onto the turntable. Pelican are up first with a slice of instrumental post rock type gear. The riff's not bad at all and Business lady agrees. So if you're after a good riff this week then this is your port of call. I don't actually know what a port of call is but I'm sure its what people say in this context. It's a feel good rock n roller. Young Widow's track ' 'Mid-Western' has a wobbling grindy bassline, solid drums and again a rocker of a riff. It's turning into quite a series! Following on the heels of their breakthrough Old Wounds album, Young Widows have assembled an all-killer-no-filler split single series, featuring new, unreleased Young Widows jams, split up over four separate 7" singles, accompanied by a handful of their favorite friends and artists on the opposite sides of each single. Those artists include Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Melt-Banana, Pelican, and My Disco. All songs by all artists are brand new and exclusive to this series. Each single is strictly limited to a one-time pressing of 2,000 copies. The artwork for the four singles fits together to form one large, beautiful puzzled image. This third single in the series features Young Widows and Pelican. “The perfect example of a band hitting their stride.” Lambgoat / “Young Widows generously churn out some truly enjoyable noise while inflicting a few bruises in the process.”Treble / “Young Widows have chosen the finest of raw materials to work with and managed to stitch them together with untold skill and ingenuity, carving out an ugly, brutish sound for themselves that’s taut, jagged and lumberingly powerful.” Rock-A-Rolla.
Tracks : 1. Mid-Western (4:09) 2. Inch Above Sand (3:32).
