This record left our Bum Bum Brian feeling ecstatic.

Before decamping to a Scottish retreat in April I went on Business Lady's recommendation to see a new group from Glasgow - story being an old Leeds underground stalwart had returned to his native city and started this headfuckingly great new band called Divorce by all accounts. It's a cliche but I really wasn't expecting this brutal & thrilling onslaught!! A five piece specialising in nihilistic Chicago noise rock smeared with this chaotic no-wave abandon. The end result is nothing short of jawdropping. 'Early Christianity' features visceral dirty guitar spiralling into lunging basslines with this piledriving drum maelstrom pinning it all tightly together - all topped by a woman with tonsils carved from titanium bellowing bile filled sloganeering like a furious pit bull into the melee! 'Pipedown' changes tack, a fierce spindly new wave guitar line battles with this grinding Jesus Lizard bass, the drums as fuck-you as desired. The woman continues shouting like Lydia Lunch's seriously pissed off daughter. I love it so much. My fave track is 'Juice of Youth', the furious punk drums remind me of bands like Amen, the guitar sounds like scratchy No Wave legends DNA and the woman continues to be the most manic preacher you could wish to set ears on (Her name is Sinead by the way, but you're too scared to ask her name..) The EP lurches on into punchy Scratch Acid-like territory, then a sludgy early Sonic Youth-esque dirge that is just divine before banging back into form, determined to batter yr head in! I'm totally taken by this group of deviant urchins and their full frontal dirt rock. They're the most intense & brilliant thing I've seen/heard for a long time, I implore you to buy this Divorce 10" & see them ASAP.

What their label says...

Optimo Music release the debut self-titled 10” EP from DIVORCE in late June. Born in Glasgow through a frustration that THEIR kinda music wasn't getting heard in the city, DIVORCE decided that instead of adding to the choir of miserablists and moaners they would instead 'make their own scene'. Brought together through random encounters, solid friendships and drunken obsessive discussions at terrible parties, the five members who make up DIVORCE (Sinead Youth: vocals - Hillary Van Scoy: guitar/vocals - VSO: bass, vocals - Andy Browntown: drums, vocals - Vickie MacDonald: guitar ) had no more of an exacting agenda than just MAKE NOISE and MAKE IT GOOD. Trend-hopping was anathema, a course of action so abhorrent to everyone involved it didn't figure from the very beginning. DIVORCE make no claims for indie credibility or outsider obtuseness, for them to please oneself is the whole of the law. Their sound quickly coalesed and in a flurry of collective inspiration and enthusiasm a set of songs came together that were ready to be heard and felt by the public only a mere three months after forming, with a sense of stagecraft that would appear confrontational to the audience (Sinead's disrespect of the band/audience 'barrier' often resulted in her giving many in the crowd a more intimate recital) but simply figured to the band as the only honest way to perform. Early on, this attitude regarding their music, performance and general outlook, got the attention of Glasgow's seminal club OPTIMO (ESPACIO), who invited them to perform at their Sunday residency last November. One brief yet thunderous show later a promise was made to have their noise preserved on vinyl; the results of which can be heard by you now. Recorded fast and loud in true SST Records style last February by Chris White of fellow Glasgow noiseniks Plaaydoh, DIVORCE's debut 10” EP (untitled, or self-titled, it's your call) features four examples of their anvil-heavy, rhythmically propulsive NAE-WAVE sound; incorporating elements of late '70s lower Manhattan art-noise and mid '80s Chicago ferocity, then embellishing the lot with their own very individual sense of intent and execution. It's a recording that captures all these elements, aiming to offer a mere taste of the rough-edged aggression of their live show. Future plans are being made now. Shows all around the UK are being organised for the autumn and more vinyl assaults are forthcoming. Putting the DI-E in Divorce!
