Zoey Van Goey - The Cage Was Unlocked All Along

The Cage Was Unlocked All Along by Zoey Van Goey

4...according to our on Thu 15 Oct, 2009.

Next up on the old ears is Zoey Van Goey's 'The Cage Was Unlocked All Along' CD on the Left In The Dark label. This Glasgow band create indie pop with a tiny smattering of folk. This isn't really my thing but in terms of this stuff it's fairly high quality and they're clearly a talented bunch of musicians who play drums, drum machines, acoustic and electric guitars, pedals, Microkorg, Electribe EA-1, piano, viola, banjo, dulcimer, pump organ, loops and samples, xylophones, tambourines, sleigh bells, shakers, coffee mugs, fingar cymbals, vocals, fake mellotrons, fake celeste, real Casios and giraffe necks (well all except the last one which I added to the list myself). The vocals are a mixture of boy girl with some intelligent and quirky lyrics.

Genre: Indie Folk Pop

In two sentences: Exquisite indie folk-pop from Glasgow based band produced by Paul Savage (The Delgados, Phantom Band). Reminiscent of the Shins, Young Marble Giants and flaming lips, with lyrics covering everything from impending apocalypse to teaching English in Japan

– The Independent

“Clever, beguiling folk-tinged guitar pop from Glasgow, whose debut single was produced by Belle and Sebastian’s Stuart Murdoch, and whose songs are both funny and poignant”
 – The Scotsman

“Not yer typical indie outfit, this continually evolving three-piece deal in beautifully understated pop songs that sparkle and fizz with intelligence and power. Highly recommended’
– The Skinny
