Not been mad keen on the majority of Prefuse 73's output over the years, the odd remix or album track poking it's nose into my conscience but largely his laconic jazz hop becomes much like aural wallpaper for me. 'The Forest of Oversensitivity' is a 12"/CD EP, appearing as a companion piece to the recent album, sci-fi novel sleeve to boot. 'Overkill Choir' features strange cut up vocodered vocals, distorted into a cyber soul blur with a downtempo slow-burning jazzy rythym, it's actually a pretty sweet tune with loads of swaying, shuffling spice & slightly stumbling percussion, overlaid with that hazy post Fly-Lo essence (even though Scott Herren started all that in the first place!!) 'Relief Choir' has tender floating choral vocals over a light percussive lounge-y backdrop and a bobbing bassline. Truly 21st century soul. The version of 'Preperation Kid's Choir' here is a calmly juddering funky cut with Pinky & Perky vocals & spacey synths. 'Always Alone Choir' is a disorientating stew taking in a funky drum break (almost Can-esque!), a sea of processed & distorted vocals all coated in a blanket of meandering electronic madness. Closer 'Simple Loop Choir' is a sleepy-time semi-ambient piece with dreamy soft keys, subtle electronic splurges & more of that impenetrable but quite intriguing voice manipulation. Still nothing for me to truly get exited about but a largely pleasant & rewarding listen from this seminal soundscaper.Prefuse 73 (aka Guillermo Scott Herren) is one of the most renowned producers around today.
Over the past 18 months he’s remixed the likes of TV On The Radio, Pelican, BLK JKS and Cornelius as well as having collaborated in the past with Battles and School of Seven Bells.
This EP follows his critically acclaimed album ‘Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian’, and contains three brand new tracks, as well as two radical reworkings of tracks from his album.
The EP’s release will be followed by a full UK headline tour featuring both Prefuse 73 and his recent project Diamond Watch Wrists.
