Gregg Kowalsky - Tape Chants

Tape Chants by Gregg Kowalsky

Gregg Kowalsky has a new CD out on Kranky. It's his 2nd for the label (I think) and from what I remember it doesn't sound massively different to his previous album. Well I can't remember exactly what his previous album was like but I'm basing it on reading my excellently informative review for it where I described it as 'sleepy bobo music'. Tape Chants is the name of his new ambient drone opus and it's constructed using tapes as the source material. Its a minimal album where not much goes on for a while before something small and minimal creeps in for a bit. It picks up the anti about half way through with some slow mantra esque style kettle drumming and then drifts off again. Most definitely a good album to fall asleep to. Definitely a difficult album to stay awake to but it has enough moments to make me want to listen all the way through (and stay awake!)

*  Greg Kowalsky is from Oakland, CA USA.

*  ‘Tape Chants’ follows Gregg’s ‘Through the Cardial Window’ album released in early 2006 on Kranky.

*  Moving away from the realm of digital, Greg has experimented with analogue synths, tape loops and acoustic sound. Tape Chants is made up of performances and compositions using tapes as the main source material, as well as the mono speakers of various cassette players for the piece’s amplification. All of the cassettes are tuned to each other usingt he pitch control and half-speed playback devices located on the Sony TCM 200DV cassette recorder. All of the compositions are constructed with tuned sine-waves as the starting point and the pieces are built using sources such as shruti box, percussion, gongs, etc.
