It seems I've landed some decent stuff in my pile this week which is a relief. You see you get the odd abomination that makes you lose the will to live. That's certainly not the case with this classy Kohn 'We Need More Space In The Cosmos' LP on Kraak. This is a wee bit on the Kosmische tip reminding me of a lot of old synthesizer music that fascinated me as a kid. Apparently "An ode to lost hero's such as Klaus Schulze and Jean-Michel Jarre". It's a thoroughly enjoyable listen, hypnotic with lots of lovely distant melodies and drones. As the album builds it becomes more intense with cool synth blips and pulses. A really colorful listen that has a cosmic melancholy sound and is both retro and futuristic with moments even reminding me of Wendy Carlos. Some bits even recall Zombi, Neu! when the Krautrock moment hits and then even more straight up rock, rocking like Trans Am on one tune which is a bit of a surprise. The comeback we were all waiting for! Ever since his “Bruce Willis” album (Western Vinyl, 2003) Jürgen De Blonde mainly focussed on music for dance and theatre productions. Untill recently when he relived his old synthesizer festish. This finally resulted in “We Need More Space In The Cosmos”, an ode to lost hero’s such as Klaus Schulze and Jean-Michel Jarre. The album recalls eighties electronics, i.e. an era when kraut rock culminated into new space ages and cosmic television soundtracks. But still the Köhn trademarks pop up from the very first second. His unique approach to music that made him differ from the likes of Aphex Twin and Oval in the nineties, now shows the man as a Cosmic Courier of the 21st century. Comes in a limited edition sleeve from the Yves Jeanson Geometrical Abstraction Art Collection.
