Well Kelli Ali has flung us some of her albums in the post & I've landed the one called 'Butterfly'. The former Sneaker Pimp seems to have been embroiled in producing work of a more folk tinged nature in recent years. Given how much me & my friend Claire loved 'Becoming X' back in the '90's I'm surprised she's fallen below the radar for many. Her voice still has that sweet feline purr to it, now melting over crisp acoustic, flute & cello. She's certainly an underrated talent and this digipak CD from last year is quite beautiful. Intriguingly, she reprises her version of 'Willow's Song' from that debut pimps effort (called 'How Do' back in the day..) and it still fills my head with images of Britt Ekland's body double shaking her lusty booty in the Wicker Man, probably many folks earliest erotic experience! Lovely arrangements, soothing aura, divine voice, I'd be hard pushed to choose between this & 'Rocking Horse'.....
In November 2008, Kelli Ali brought us her beautiful third solo
album, Rocking Horse - produced by composer Max Richter (‘The Blue
Notebook’ ‘Waltz with Bashir’ and producer of Vashti Bunyan’s
Lookaftering album) Released on Indie label One Little Indian Records.
Rocking
Horse received critical acclaim from British tabloids and music press,
including a feature in The Sunday Times and high ratings from the
Independent & The Guardian.
Lovers of Kelli’s Rocking
Horse album will no doubt revel in the simple beauty of Butterfly,
which is in many ways a development of Kelli’s relationship with her
band and live audience. In re-creating the songs for her live Rocking
Horse set, Kelli found a magical language of interpretation and decided
to make a record of this process.
‘Butterfly’ is an album of sheer beauty that will delight listeners and fans of Kelli’s live set.
Kelli’s
companion piece, acoustic album ‘Butterfly’ is a charming collection of
delicate renditions of her songs old and new. Acoustic guitar and
flutes flutter daintily between cello and violin and Kelli’s unique,
pure voice to interpret songs from her Rocking Horse album as well as
new songs such as title track ‘Butterfly’ and a haunting original cover
version of ‘Willow’s Song’ from the cult classic film soundtrack ‘The
Wicker Man’.
Metamorphosis of both song and artist are captured
beautifully on this album and new life is breathed into Kelli’s earlier
songs such as ‘Wings in Motion’ which is skillfully transfigured from
its original pop form (the song is taken from Kelli’s dream pop debut
album ‘Tigermouth’) into a timeless, original folk classic.
As Kelli
writes on the inner sleeve of the Butterfly album about those of us who
continue to love and enjoy her unique and original records, “ Without
you, making music would be like watching a butterfly in the dark”.
