Our single of the week (15th May 2009)
...according to our Business Lady on Fri 15 May, 2009.
Yes yes yes! These Young widows split series 7"'s are really living up to their promise with the second installment kicking even more ass than the first. This time around Young Widows are accompanied by the mighty Melt-Banana who are on the finest of form. I reckon they've mellowed out a little over the years but they still know how to craft a fine punk rock single (a rare t'ing these days). 'Pain in Ash' begins with a strange arpeggiated electronic space loop in the vein of 'We won't get fooled again' by The Who that is eventually pummeled into the background by the familiar onslaught of scratchy guitars, pounding drums and relentless vocal yelps. They are certainly not as heavy as they used to be but they've compensated with improved songwriting ability. Brett thinks this is their best single in a long time and there is much nodding and agreement around the office. 'Long live the new weight' also sees young widows on fine form rocking a hypnotic jesus Lizard-esq bass and drum groove and sounding like the toughest garage rockers on the block. The recording is well filthy and the bass line sounds fucking RAD!!! This is kinda old school greasy Touch and Go stuff that i welcome with open arms and embrace like a long lost brother.Again this is going to be super limited, expect your orders to be cut and we will do our best to distribute them fairly. Following on the heels of their breakthrough Old Wounds album, Young Widows have assembled an all-killer-no-filler split single series, featuring new, unreleased Young Widows jams, split up over four separate 7" singles, accompanied by a handful of their favorite friends and artists on the opposite sides of each single. Those artists include Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Melt-Banana, Pelican, and My Disco. All songs by all artists are brand new and exclusive to this series. Each single is strictly limited to a one-time pressing of 2,000 copies. The artwork for the four singles fits together to form one large, beautiful puzzled image. This second single in the series features Young Widows and Melt-Banana. “The perfect example of a band hitting their stride.” Lambgoat / “Young Widows generously churn out some truly enjoyable noise while inflicting a few bruises in the process.” Treble / “Young Widows have chosen the finest of raw materials to work with and managed to stitch them together with untold skill and ingenuity, carving out an ugly, brutish sound for themselves that’s taut, jagged and lumberingly powerful.” Rock-A-Rolla.
