Werk’s latest recruit is Lone, whose brilliant wake up album ‘Lemurian’ last summer fused Dilla beats, BoC synths, and Caural’s chord changes for a trip into bright psychedelic hip hop and sun-warped exotica. The response generated by ‘Lemurian’ was incredible, praised by artists like Daedelus, Flying Lotus, Rustie and Kode9, and winning much critical end-of-year-best-of love. Now, with new tunes ‘Joy Reel’ and ‘Sunset Teens’, Lone presents a double-headed subliminal assault of defocused synths, augmented with a hypnotic glow guaranteed to put even the hardest club head into a stereo-induced trance. This time, however, the Greenhills Zone b-boy breaks out the 808, swivels his cap, and steps out into the warming seasonal haze with a boombox full of 80s R&B inspired computer talk and futuristic electrofunk. Representing an undoubtedly more thuggish update on the Lone sound, this 12” gives a taste of his eagerly anticipated first Werk Discs full-length outing, slated for early summer release.
