A Classic Education - Best Regards / Rest

Best Regards / Rest by A Classic Education

A Classic Education have achieved a rare and beautiful thing on 'Best Regards' and that's a consistently good clap sound on record. Notoriously difficult to record, the clap is a precious percussive sound that can enhance almost any indie rock single and give the necessary boost to get the kids dancing. This single is recorded in a strange and ghostly manner with spooky piano motifs and and way to much reverb for this kind of tune. The vocals sound distant when they should dominate the mix and the beats are also floating a little aimlessly. Saying that it still has loose indie rock charm but i can't quite put my finger on why. I guess you'll have to take a listen for yourself. B-side 'Rest' sounds more consistent but not as interesting. Strange band. Like Archers of Loaf if they'd been into Modest Mouse and Echo and Bunnymen. Take a listen.

‘Best Regards/Rest’ is the new AA 7” release from
Bologna’s own A Classic Education and marks the third
release on Bailiwick Records. The single features songs
recorded at the back end of 2007 up in the old mountains
at Bombanella Studio, tracked and mixed by Jeremy
Warmsley. ‘Rest’ bristles with the perfectly constrained
grandeur of an old love song whilst the flip-side ‘Best
Regards’ hastily encapsulates the bands pop-leanings as
it rolls along on a powerfully persuasive stream of handclaps,
vocal tics and a quietly optimistic string section.
Having played in support of the Arcade Fire, Modest
Mouse and Lightspeed Champion the band recently
returned from a mini-tour taking in dates in London,
New York and four shows at this years SxSW. On sale
from April 27.
