Further Complications by Jarvis Cocker

Of all the people to grow a big bristly beard, Jarvis Cocker wasn't anywhere near the top of my list. Not that i'm sad enough to have a list of prospective celebrity facial hair disasters. He looks quite cool although even more like an insane Geography teacher than ever! 'Further Complications' is his new album on Rough Trade and is remarkably better than the last collection of britpop dadrock, purely by virtue of having been engineered by the esteemed Steve Albini! There's some 60's flecked bar-room numbers on here but it sounds truly like he's shaking off the caberet theatrics and sub Suede-isms and just, like, rocking out. Guitars fuzz, drums are bashed brazenly (courtesy of the multi talented Ross Orton) and this whole mix of raucous space/garage/glam rock & eccentric English poetry is just the ticket on second listen. There's also more Pulp/Tindersticks-esque numbers shoehorned in halfway, like 'Leftovers' & 'I Never Said I Was Deep' to appease the nostalgist/sentimentalist but this, overall, is Uncle Jarvis's discreet but powerful RAWK record. 'Homewrecker!' is a great tribute to prime Roxy Music 'Fuckingsong' is dirty white boy funk rock with a touch of Blues Explosion. Then the punky 'Caucasian Blues is fantastic, spilling with tounge in cheek vitriol and should slay the festival crowd, probably the harshest thing he's ever done. On first listen I sneered at this album but on further inspection it's a meaty, enjoyable romp that will impress older Cocker lovers and hopefully win him a new army of admirers!
