Oh God. Mr Shitmat AKA Henry Collins is back. Did anyone see that piccy of him in Plan B as part of the Planet Mu article? He appears like an 18th century mortician man. Looks like the kinda freaky dude who'd be sizing you up for your coffin the moment he met you. Brrrrr! Anyway, he's wanting to kill off his slightly passe moniker and in true fashion he's delivered a swansong junglist memoir titled 'One Foot in the Rave' Harking back to the early-mid 90s amen break/hardstep scene, this is less fashioned from splattered breakcore beats and is infact a plausible & fun record that often recalls the likes of Remarc et al. Of course he abuses the purist essence, his breakdowns are sometimes deliciously twisted, he has a muted echo of a dog barking running through 'Sniffer Dogs', he then endorses the drum track from Snap's 'The Power' albeit sped up but regardless of the occasional pranksterish trick, this is a full on grooving party odyssey with some excellent production and impressive fills. His use of samples on this album is quite subtle too, Comedic pepperings that don't overpower the floor burning pace of the journey and the ecstatic frantic rhythms. Once this hits the student house bashes, it'll be accepted as a Shitty classic. Excellent to realise I can still listen to this man's deranged vision without wincing! CD/2x12"* Stepping up for album number four on Planet Mu, if you don’t know Shitmat by now then where have you been? Co-founder of the seminal ’Wrong Music’ record label and veteran of the breakcore scene, Henry Collins from Brighton is back.
* Is ’One Foot in the Rave’ the end of the line for Shitmat as you know him? Will this be his last album under the Shitmat moniker? if so, what a better way to end things with the way it all began, back to the oldskool.
* With throwback albums being the fashion, Shitmat joins the likes of Zomby and Glowstyx to bring a nostalgic album of ’92-’94 jungle breaks and amen killers. Shitmat has gone to great effort in the album to keep the original authentic Jungle sound using an Akai S950 sampler, the hardcore junglist’s weapon of choice and sampling cassettes from old pirate radio shows. This amen-heavy full length is reminiscent of DJ Seduction, Foul Play and early Remarc with a tip of the hat from Shitmat towards the oldskool masters of the break.
* Shitmat continues to tour with dates across the U.K and Europe with a headlining date at the Bangface weekender where fans will be able to witness the full on gore and carnage of Shitmat’s One Foot in the Rave tour.
