Hunter's Loaf - We Buy Gold

We Buy Gold by Hunter's Loaf

4...according to our on Thu 30 Apr, 2009.

Hunter's Loaf is Phil Avey of Unhome's current project and sees the guitarist on fine form. 'Hunter's Loaf' are perfect for the Unlabel, a perfect balance of dynamics, smooth groove and subtle intensity. Obviously, 'We buy gold' shares alot in common due to Avey's trademark sound but on this second release occasional vocals punctuate the usual mix of drums, bass, guitar, synths and vibraphone and bring something new to the table, 'Hello Sarah' being the best example. The drums on this track are well slippery (it sounds like the joeyfat drummer though i don't know for sure) and the guitars remind me of the Redneck Manifesto and june of 44 combined together, a sound i have always been very fond of. Other tracks like 'Red Adare' bring tinges of country influenced dynamics to mix whilst never quite sounding like proper country, more like Pullman or Pinback, making use of some of the guitar elements but ignoring the rest of the stereotypes associated with the country sound. As you can imagine the guitar is both hauntingly beautiful and incredibly well played. An accomplished release and another example to support my claim that post-rock will re-emerge and lull the electro kids into playing thier instruments better. Packaged with the usual Unlabel charm this is limited to 4300 copies and has a nice photo glued to the heavy card sleeve much like those old Hood 7"'s you see knocking about.

The second album from former Unhome guitarist Phil Avey, this time featuring occasional vocals alongside guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, vibraphone. Another timeless collection of work, the beauty and quality of the music shines.

Tri-fold sleeves were cut from thick card stock, each hand assembled with individual photos attached, limited to 300 copies.
