Professional mad bastard Anton Newcombe has a charmingly unhinged EP out under his protective BJM umbrella. This one goes by the name 'Smoking Acid' and the first two tunes adopt a trashed-out punkgasm manifesto of sludgy shoegazer space rock that sounds suitably shambling, fuzzy & raw enough for this man to sit up & take notice. Recorded in Iceland where a probable fear of all-out Apocolypse or ex-band mates has him squirreled away making some fine tunes indeed. The remixes on the flip are pretty meditative dream pop techno ruminations, the first reminds me of Discordia & Flowchart with a spot of Trans-Global Underground, the second is deeper and more hypnotic with a tabla & a floppier dubbier rhythm. I'd definitely DJ with this, perfect for a Sunday chill out set! Unfortunately the last track 'Super Fucked' poos me out a bit with the slurry vocals, cheesy effects & pedestrian beat making it sound like some badly dated career end plodder from the late 80s but he's always been notorious for self sabotage & not-giving-a-flying fudgemonster about anything anyone says particularly so who am I to critisise a minor blip on a potentially great EP? Housed in garish G/fold thru @ records. The vinyl is much more expensive due to an entire extra fully etched art disc courtesy of Icelandic collaborator Jón Sæmundur Auðarson but if you just want the tunes, proceed to the digital format. The Vinyl of this brand new EP is work of art collaboration between Anton Newcombe & Icelandic artist Jón Sæmundur Auðarson the double 12" EP consists of 5 new tracks by the Brian Jonestown Massacre & double sided etched disc by Jón Sæmundur Auðarson .The vinyl is stricly limited to 1,000 Units worldwide .The CD is a single 5 track CD but with the same superb cover art as the LP .
After the extensive tour of Europe ,Australia , New Zealand & a few select dates in New York State (especially ATP supporting My Bloody Valentine et al ) in 2008 , Anton went to Berlin to focus on his next album ,which is due out later this year. 4 weeks before hitting the US tour in April ,Anton was bursting with ideas & went to Iceland where this 5 track EP was recorded (also along with several new tracks that will be out on the new album) . The Brian Jonestown Massacre have just completed a successful 6 week tour of the USA .
