OK onto Our Brother The Native with their brand new wonk opus on Fat Cat. Not sure if you're familiar with these guys or not but we loved their last album. I've heard 'Sacred Psalms' a few times now and I like it but's not doing it for me as much as the last album did. You can probably blame the Animal Collective and their last album for that one. These really sound an awful lot like earlier Animal Collective at times. It's ben said before and I'm sure it will be said again. They tread a milliard path with the acid fried psychedelic campfire folk wonk rock on offer. It's all over the shop and it's (obviously) unfair to tarnish them with the brush of other bands as their doing their own thing which happens to just be a bit similar. It's a percussive beast with some unusual rhythm going on and the song structures and all over the place. You don't know what's gonna happen next. It's as close to a lucky dip as you're gonna get. There's elements of Arcade Fire in there as well our Brett reckons!! They're clearly a good band and I'd say if you're new to 'em then check out one of there albums as it's all good stuff. CD only on Fat Cat!· Our Brother The Native are part of a burgeoning, young Michigan
underground scene that has produced some considerable talent. Now in their
fourth year as a band, they remain at college, collaborating across states and
eagerly learning new instruments.
· The line-up for ‘Sacred Psalms’ comprised founder members Josh
Bertram (vocals, guitar, saxophone, piano, banjo, organ, synth, drums /
percussion, programming / samples / noise) and Chaz Knapp (vocals,
guitar, banjo)
· With Josh (aged 19) in Michigan and Chaz (20) in California, their creative
process has been a mixture of working individually in isolation, sending
material and ideas back and forth across the internet, and occasionally
coming together to rehearse, record and tour.
· This album was recorded, produced and mixed by Josh in his
basement studio between January and August 2008.
· Inspired by a love of African, Caribbean, Middle Eastern, Balkan, and
Japanese Gamelan music.
· The band’s first ever live show coincided with the principle members’ first
ever meeting at Fat Cat's Open Circuit festival in Belgium in 2006 and the
band has toured with Múm and Joan of Arc.
