...according to our Phil on Thu 30 Apr, 2009.
Not a day goes past in the office where the word dork isn't mentioned. The boys here are obsessed by 'em and if you're wondering what one is then look here and you'll see a chap touching one. Then you'll wonder (as I did) for a good while as to why he's touching a whale's cock and doesn't mind having his picture taken. That of course has nothing to do with Zach Hill's (Hella) And Guillermo Scott Herren's (Prefuse 73) brand new megaproject on Warp called Diamond Watch Wrists. Yeah it's definitely watch wrists and not wrist watch. Those crazy guys. 'Ice Capped At Both Ends' is a limited indies only release on Warp for the time being. Apparently there's only a few hundred but I'll believe that when badgers take over England and invade the rest of Europe. It's a pleasing blend of wierd rocky/jazz experimental drumming (as you'd expect) and Mr Herren's smooth vocals and instrumentation. In a nutshell it's like Savath & Savalas with nuts drumming.... It's got that warm soul sound that Herren makes (I bet him doing a crap sounds good) with loads of complex drumming unsoftening the blow. If that seems appealing then check it out... I'm gonna give it another spin later as it sounds a bit good like!· Guillermo Scott Herren (aka Prefuse 73) is one of the most renowned
producers of avant-rock and hip hop around today. Over the past 12 months
he’s remixed the likes of TV On The Radio, Pelican, BLK JKS and
Cornelius as well as having collaborated in the past with Battles and School
of Seven Bells.
· Zach Hill is an incredible, self-taught drummer, hailing from California. He’s
played in bands with Chino Moreno (Deftones), Rob Crow (Pinback),
Marnie Stern and will soon be drumming with The Mars Volta, as well as
playing in his main group Hella.
· Together they’ve formed Diamond Watch Wrists, and released the album
‘Ice Capped at Both Ends’. The album shows an entirely new form of
Herren creations, organic songs featuring Guillermo’s plaintive
vocals, guitar and studio wizardry, Hill’s singular drumming as well as
previously unheard nods to 60’s European acid-folk, classic American singersongwriters
and krautrock.
· Ty Braxton (Battles) also guests on ‘Simple Love Notes (5 Years
Later)’.
· While would call the Diamond Watch Wrists material, “simple songs about
Herren everyday things” they, of course, strike the listener as much more.
Deceptively complex in their arrangements, the songs never fail to strike a
fascinating balancing act between brooding and uplifting, making for
an uncommonly well-rounded album.
· Limited edition CD - 300 copies only.
