The Black Dog - Further Vexations

Further Vexations by The Black Dog

4...according to our on Fri 01 May, 2009.

For this techno freak any Black Dog release is welcomed with open ears. I must admit that at first I wasn't entirely convinced with their recent direction although I did really love the Bite Thee Back 12" on Dust Science. Anyway having got over my hangovers of being an oldskool fan I'm digging their recent stuff. They're doing a tight blend of more late night dancefloor friendly deep techno and electro as well as pure immersing home listening stuff. 'Further Vexations' is a cracking album that shows off the producers skills at tackling both minimal and melodic classic sounding techno. Check the detroit style of 'CCTV Nation'. I can hear the Robert Hood influence happening in the percussion on a few of the tunes. There's some wonderful hazy melodies in the tunes giving off a kinda druggy smokey feel. Classy stuff on CD and limited triple vinyl on Soma.

· The Black Dog are without a doubt one of the hardest working acts in electronic
music. No sooner have they released one of 2008’s best albums in ‘Radio Scarecrow’ and
the massive 12” ‘Detroit Vs. Sheffield’ which featured two remixes from Detroit minimal
grandmaster Robert Hood, they now prepare for their next album release.
· ‘Further Vexations’ is a real successor to ‘Radio Scarecrow’. The thinking behind the
predecessor is still very evident with even more bite, but there’s something about the new
album that lends itself to the dark club atmosphere.
· Perhaps the recent bout of constant gigging has had its effect on the act because this one
is going to be tearing up floors around the world on its release. ‘Further Vexations’
might have taken half the time to create but still manages to maintain the same degree of
meticulous detail and attention as its predecessor, and is a complete package of tracks
demanding to be listened to from start to finish.
· ‘Further Vexations’ looks to rouse the sort of political attitudes that have been sorely missing
from electronic music since rave’s backlash against the Criminal Justice Act in the 90’s.
