What we say about Everything is Everything, by Autorotation
This record left our Bret feeling happy.
Hey, this CD's got a remix on it by ex-Communard Dave Renwick so anything else is just gravy. Having said that, Autorotation do make it quite easy to say nice things about them with their totally agreeable take on the overcrowded genre of neoambientdreampoptronicaDM. For the most part they're rocking a chorused-up guitar sound right out of an 80s 4AD record but the electronics that go on around them aren't a token 'indie dance' gesture, the tracks are clearly built from the ground up with the various elements' interplay in mind and for the most part it works a Laika-ish treat. Everything is Everything turned out to be a pleasant surprise in handsome digipak trousers.
What the label says about Everything is Everything, by Autorotation:
The idea that became Autorotation was born in Toronto some years ago
when multi-instrumentalists/producers Robyn Sellman and Igor Olejar
met through their work in ambient electronica, IDM, dreampop, and
film music.
Fast forward to 2007 when they escaped the restrictive trade laws of
the USA and moved to Deptford, London in search of like-minded
musicians and a more tour-permitting market.
Robyn and Igor are now joined by Phil Stutely on the bass, and
Kaloian Bukov on the drums. Experimenting and blurring the
distinctions between groove, noise, orchestration and vocalisation,
they transform their live shows into audio-visual spectacles with
large projection screens, complex electronic set-ups and captivating
performances. But, they can, and do, unplug, simplify and play their
acoustic sets in a middle of a field.
Everything Is Everything is Autorotation's first full-length
release. Best described as Kate Bush singing on a Sigur Ros track
that was remixed by Aphex Twin, while being drowned in a sea of
shoegazeness by the Cocteau Twins. The album features eight moody,
politically-charged cinematic songs that are multi-layered, harmonic
and mechanised, with soaring female vocals counter-pointed by melodic
bass lines, fortified by driving beats and spiced with digital glitches.
The album also includes two remixes, one by Dave Renwick (ex
Communards) and the other by Norway Pumpkin from Japan, who was the
winner of Autorotation's on-line remix competition."
