Ophibre/Katchmare - Divided Transmissions

Divided Transmissions by Ophibre/Katchmare

Now we review things from the past. It's Friday last week and Phil wants the next years worth of reviews done and dusted by hometime so here I am, making a start with a split cassette in the form of Divided Transmissions from Ophibre and Katchmare, released on Tape Drift. The Ophibre side is currently clanging away and, as Anthony just rightfully put it, it sounds like someone trying to escape from inside a can of petrol. Or maybe someone rearranging their drawers? All while a very slightly wavering drone makes your head feel like it's going all bendy like that bit on Hellraiser. Katchmare don't clatter about but he/she/they/it drone along in a droney style that starts off high-pitched drone, goes a bit windy drone then finishes on a little organ drone tip. Quite a cool tape but I can't shake the feeling we should all be listening to some banging Miami bass at this time on a Friday. There's gorgeous cardboardy artwork for you to look at!

A perfectly matched split tape. First side is Ophibre from Boston.  Usually known for his buzzing drone masterpieces, this one delves more into the electroacoustic vein, and finds rich treasures there.  A live performance entitled "rowboat for laptop", it's a very very compelling listen, accumulating power as it goes along to its final conclusion.  Second side is Katchmare, solo project of Nick Hoffman from Normal, Illinois.  Anything but normal, this is a beautiful set of ghostly tones, haunted space, and electroacoustic invention.  Very minimal yet very addictive.
