Blue Roses is Laura Groves from Shipley, nr. Bradford. That's my hometown so she's my homegirl. Yo. Her self titled LP/CD on Salvia/XL is just the ticket to quell my jaded mind on this Thursday from hell. I hate using the word accomplished as A/ it sounds patronising when there's so many exiting musicians & artists out there who are just as great without having a big "prodigious genius" tag round their necks and a ***** Mojo review. B/ I sound like someones Dad and I can't play more than 2 note keyboard myself! Problem is, this 21 yr old lass has the most startling breadth of vision, a voice that freezes you in your stride and a bold and affecting modern folk classic on her hands. I can't tell you how pure and heartrending these songs are, the arrangments are full bodied, fresh and gorgeously layered, the songs warm & crisp, like she's playing right there in your living room (she did actually record in peoples living rooms, hence the intimate sound!) There's some subtle embellishments to the traditional acoustic guitar here, piano, fiddle, xylophone and some a few discreet samples/electronics in various spots and her vocals are occasionally multi-tracked to create a choral aura. It's a grand, magical album is this, the lead single appearing near the end which is always a sure sign that everyone's confident of the supreme quality therein. CD/LP (to come)Recorded with friends in and around Shipley in
Yorkshire, ‘Blue Roses’ is a grand statement from
Laura Groves, an artist showing great maturity
beyond her 21 years.
“I wanted to record in the north because it felt like
the right context for the songs, and it meant that we
could work in the way that we did - borrowing
instruments and living rooms and things rather than
having a month or so in one studio. Ultimately I
think this approach contributed to the eclecticism of
the record” - Laura Groves (Blue Roses).
Released on CD and LP. Vinyl is packaged in a
wrapped and stickered gatefold sleeve with a
12 page insert.
