The Virgins - The Virgins

The Virgins by The Virgins

The Virgins release their eponymous album through Atlantic Records on the 20th April 2009. The band are already at the epicentre of a flurry of ecstatic press accolades across the Atlantic - including a rapturous 4* Rolling Stone review, Alternative Press naming them as one of the '100 Bands You Need To Know', and Spin magazine's declaration that "The Virgins have had the kind of out-of-thin ether rise that causes bloggers to gush and their peers to curse". As Vice magazine put it - "We're jealous of their future, basically".

The Virgins exemplify the sound and style of downtown New York City in 2009. They came together in 2006, the brainchild of songwriter/performer Donald Cumming. Having lived on NYC's streets since the age of 16, Cumming's teen years were chronicled by artist/photographer Ryan McGinley in his now legendary debut solo show at the Whitney Museum of American Art.

With Cumming joined by bassist Nick Zarin-Ackerman, guitarist Wade Oates, and drummer Erik Ratensperger, The Virgins began playing at downtown parties and their third show ever saw them take Paris by storm, performing at designer Agnès B's fashion week party alongside Patti Smith and Sonic Youth. They been busy storming the US live scene in recent months, sharing stages with the likes of Cold War Kids, Tapes 'n Tapes and The Long Blondes, and also wrapped up a mammoth 36-date 'Nylon Magazine Music Tour' in June.
