Peaking Lights - Imaginary Falcons

Peaking Lights have been exciting the kids recently with their skewed take on dub aesthetics. Now signed to Domino's Weird World imprint on the strength of their Not Not Fun LP '936' things are looking good for this Madison Wisconsin duo. 'Imaginary Falcons' is the duo's debut on Night People, a fantastic label who've championed many a fine artist/group including Tyvek, Terror Bird, Ela Orleans and Dirty Beaches among others. We've not had 'Imaginary Falcons' in before so this is my first exposure to the record. It sounds very different to '936' from what I remember of it. Much more lo-fi and certainly less definable as a Dub or Dub influenced record, 'Imaginary Falcons' has much more in common with psych and lo-fi electronic music. I like the variety of approaches and the fact that each song sounds like it was recorded at different times and circumstances. They toy with African grooves, simple drum machine motifs, spaced out echoplex vocals, loose synth improvisations and odd sonic treatments to create a variety of moods. I guess it's the sound of a duo finding their feet and getting to grips with their sound. It also sounds like two like minded individuals enjoying their new found musical freedom, perhaps liberating themselves of old musical hang-up's. Shitto! Just realised this is the very same Indra Dunis who played drums in Numbers! They're one of my all time favourite bands! 3 x respect! Re-evaluation of Peaking Lights starts.......now.
