Well that startingly beautiful lady St. Vincent AKA Annie Clark has her second album out soon on new home 4AD and of course they have to sneak out a limited single for the collectors to get all soapy tit wank excited all over the shop. 'Actor Out of Work' has one of those odd widescreen glam things going on. A fat thumping beat, snickety guitars gliding & growling low in the mix, flecks of (possibly) muted brass and curious samples, all this topped with this seriously smooth sing-song vocal that slightly recalls Kim Deal in it's sassy escalating style. I'd say fans of Stereolab, Goldfrapp, MBV's poppier moments & Laika would seriously lap this mighty stomping ethereal shagfest of a single. Wonderful. The writing process for ‘Actor’ was certainly an
idiosyncratic one. Annie Clark took to immersing herself
in some of her favourite films – ‘Badlands’, ‘Pierrot Le
Fou’, ‘The Wizard Of Oz’, ‘Stardust Memories’,
‘Sleeping Beauty’ – and then beginning each song as a
secret film score. The resulting eleven tracks
combine the fantasy of Disney, the sweep of
Morricone, David Mamet’s unsettling dramatic
form and the alienation of Philip Roth.
‘Actor Out Of Work’, one of many highlights from
‘Actor’, is a devastating sonic kiss-off, complete with slyly
poisonous lyrics and steamrolling guitars. Less than two
and a half minutes in duration it is as deliciously succinct
in delivery and comes backed with an exclusive track
‘Bicycle’.
