The Black Dog. Bloomin' love some of their stuff I do. Thought that comeback album on Soma - 'Radio Scarecrow'- was a bit of a duffer but their recent EPs have been boss, including 'Vexing' which is a new 3 tracker on Soma to warm up for the release of new album 'Further Vexations'. '0093' is quite a sweet number, subtle classic techno with a sharp bite and when the head massaging synths start colliding like woozy chimes, you know The Dog has well and truly bitten back (groan...) 'You're Only SQL' is a breakbeat number with a growly bass lunge & loads of understated electronic crinkles & chirrups. Nice classic emotive synths like 'Amber' era Autechre come in later and then the fabulous chunky break comes stomping back in to focus for total floor melting devestation. A stormer, up there with some of their classics methinx. The exclusive 'Plinth' tagged on the end is a pretty, twinkly downtempo number with that completes this fine EP beautifully. develops into a shimmering, ecstatic cut guaranteed to get the hands in the air.
· ‘You’re Only SQL’ follows, packing a hefty punch of breakbeat techno. This is a
chunky, abrasive slice of malevolence intent purely upon resistance. Definitely one
to test the most powerful of soundsystems at peaktime, this one is sure to rile the
dancefloor into a frenzy.
· Finishing off the 12” is an exclusive track, ‘Plinth’. This, in stark contrast to the
rest of the EP, is one for the afterhours, showcasing the
