Our single of the week (17th April 2009)
...according to our Brian on Thu 16 Apr, 2009.
The Bink Pink. Bloody hell, I'm sick of their name already. How about the flabby orange or the rotund peach? Their second single, 1st for 4AD is 'Velvet' which sticks in the head much more than their debut which just suggested an afinity with Animal Collective & Arcade Fire. In fact it's such a sludgy, euphoric shoe-threatening, air-punching, frontal lobe dissolving behemoth of a tune, I can totally understand the appeal. It's kind of got this Verve meets MBV swagger, this colossal ever-climbing vibe of anthemic unity. The general construction of this song is very generic, it's about the gargantuan production here. It sounds like the kind of thing Alan McGee may have had a heart attack about had it landed on his desk at Creation, the walls of guitar are just ear shreddingly HUGE, the slow juddering beat like a thumping pulse. This reminds me a little in intensity of April Skies era Mary Chain with the congregative feel of Animal Collective's vocal barnstorming and the sheer rousing spirit of Glasvegas all topped with a sound like Godzilla eating Kevin Shields guitar collection. Fucking huge as you like. Really limited 7" only.We calculate your shipping costs by taking the heaviest item in your order and calculating that at the 'Heaviest Item' price.
