Chavel Sombre started life as a one-man outfit with a focus on tripped out, shoe-gazing, slow folk. This 's/t' record is the first official long player release and sees Chavel teamed up with song-writer/producer and all-round good dude, Sonic Boom of Spacemen 3, E.A.R and the awesome Spectrum. It appears to be some kind of partnership with Sonic Boom producing as well as playing additional percussion and keyboards (inc. a favorite instrument of mine, the Omni chord!!). They are also accompanied by top guest players Britta Phillips (extra bass, microkorg) and Dean Wareham (tasty guitar work). Chavel writes in a very similar way to Jason Pearce and these tracks share alot in common with the down beat, slow rock of later Spiritualized releases. The production further adds to the spaced out nature of music, sounding in part like 60's Phil Spector pop whilst maintaining that space swagger i associate with early Sonic Boom output. The music is light, breezy and incredibly slow so it can be define as nothing other than slowcore folk. The perfect accompaniment to a sunny day out on the lawn with a picnic basket full of space cakes. Mongin'!!.Delicate druggy slowcore folk. Debut album by ChevalSombre. One-man band Cheval Sombre emerged in the early 2000s, writing and recording songs in an apartment studio on the Hudson River, NY. After sending initial recordings to Sonic Boom (of Spacemen 3 / Spectrum), recording sessions with Sonic tookplace in March 2006, in Jersey City, NJ. Further sessions followed over the next two years, both in New York and in Rugby, with guest musicians Dean Wareham & Britta Phillips. To date Cheval Sombre has released three UK-only 7” singles (included here), all of which sold out immediately and are now collectors’ items. Produced by Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3, Spectrum, E.A.R.) • Features Dean Wareham, Britta Phillips (Luna) & Sonic Boom.
