What we say about You Can Have What You Want, by Papercuts
This record left our Brian feeling ecstatic.
Now the Papercuts CD lands. We've been caning the promo for months now & I'd almost forgotten about its rustic charms in the deluge of ever-flowing new releases, week in, week out. 'You Can Have What You Want' is what I'd like them to say in my local pie shop when I jokingly intone "Owt for free, Mister?", doffing my grubby school cap towards the glow-cheeked master pie maker, Jeff Crusty. The overall vibe of this band appears to be somewhere between early Tindersticks, Broadcast & Mazzy Star with a slightly lo-fi 60s garage sheen and a gently dreamy male vocal. A reedy organ sighs over muted, cymbal-heavy drums, the searching voice coming over hazy and sad-eyed, the guitars & bass plucked away discreetly to create these awesome, heartbreaking & emotive songs that has me wanting to adopt them, like right fucking now. I insist. Also worth recalling is that first Parsley Sound single on Mo Wax. They've got that fuzzy retro sound with those rolling United States of America style drums but most importantly of all, some delightfully fresh & precious songs with blissed chord changes that really stick fast in your head. So beautiful, I've been dying for this smashing album to come out! Cheers to Memphis Industries who seem to constantly buck trends and just release constantly great music!
