Yeah Yeah Yeahs
It's Blitz

This record left our Brett feeling happy.
Time for a new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album! Happy time for Brett if no-one else! It's called It's Blitz! and the cover is quality, I want to squish eggs and freeze time in this manner! As the lead single and lead track 'Zero' does remind me a fair bit of 'Gold Lion' from the last one in that it sounds totally underwhelming at first but kind of gets under your skin over time.. Phil's just said that it sounds like Republica and to be honest it kind of does but fuck it, it's alright by me. Most of the album does have quite a Blondie-ish new-wavey discopop sort of feel to it and while I'm tempted to write it off as soft and MOR-sounding I did that with Show Your Bones initially and it ended up being a mega-grower that I now really, really like so it wouldn't surprise me if this did the same. I do kind of miss those big, crunchy Nick Zinner riffs from the early stuff though.. They're just a totally different band these days but you can't knock them for the way they embrace change - like a far more accessible version of Liars, fittingly enough. The songwriting's still strong and Karen O retains that happy knack for a touching lyric but there's no 'Maps' on here if that's what you're reading to find out, although the lovely 'Hysteric' comes the closest in spirit the way 'Turn Into' did on the last LP. In conclusion: pretty good but should improve with further listening!

What their label says...
After releasing the underground classic “A Love Of Shared Disasters” Crippled Black Phoenix have regrouped and spent the best part of a year recording “200 Tons Of Bad Luck” Although not strictly a concept recording, the thoughts and moods of founding member Justin Greaves(Electric Wizard / Iron Monkey / Teeth Of Lions Rule Devine) re-occur throughout and link the songs in a film like way. Once again the CBP crafted the songs at Geoff Barrow’s (Portishead) State Of Art Studio. The band is made up this time of Joe Volk (Gonga), Dominic Aitchison (Mogwai), Kostas Panagiotou (Pantheist) &
Charlotte Nicholls. Joining the band on all live dates will be Joe Allen & John Langley of Saturation Point. The end result will no doubt have folk scrambling for descriptives and in the midst of the relative chaos Crippled Black Phoenix will be oblivious to it all, again giving you 200 tons of music that, if you let yourself have time to be immersed in, you shall be rewarded. Think of these albums like the moment when your life flashes before your eyes just before the inevitable conclusion.
