...according to our Ant on Thu 19 Mar, 2009.
brb>voicecoil is artist Kevin Wilkinson and he's been putting 3" mini CDr's out on his label since 2006. I hit play and 'Sonan' bursts into life with some strange unfathomable sounds coming at me. A peek inside the cover reveals that they've been created from moulded plastic on wood using close microphones and also crushed tin on concrete using condenser mics. Then you get some ambient sound recorded at Whitley Bay. So it sounds like some harsh clanking industrial gear juxtaposed with some fluffy-fied recordings??? Erm... no, it sounds fuck all like that and way more interesting. All the sounds have been quite heavily processed beyond recognition and sound like a microcosm of insect life communicating through glitches. I swear I just heard an ant say "snickers". Brett is reminded of some of the Two Lone Swordsmen interludes on Tiny Reminders. Cool stuff. Some things never seem to get any following. That was a thought that crossed my mind when I was playing these two 3"CDRs by the oddly named. Kev, the man behind it, had a small label named Muzamuza in the nineties and worked as Bigroadbreaker/brb and then was silent for a couple of years. So the name that sprang to mind was Small Cruel Party, when I heard this. On 'Occupation By Killers' Kev uses 'moulded plastic on wood using close microphones and crushed tin on concrete using condenser microphone', which is something that Small Cruel Party also have used, but it also sounds like a missing work by Key Ransone. It starts out in a rubbing, acoustic way and then slowly gets electronic treatment, in a highly compelling yet minimal manner. A great piece.
