I quite like this 7" by Love Like Fire called William. It's pretty big and pompous but on first listen it sounds like a strong decent debut. Arcade Fire mixed with bits of early Killers and there's something in there which reminds me of The Sundays though I'm sure no one else will hear that. It's quality. They're from Las Vegas 'n all... that's well gambler. Epic sounding female fronted indie rock with big guitars and big everything else.'William' is LoveLikeFire's opening statement, and an alluring introduction to this brilliantly compelling new alt.rock quartet from Las Vegas.
Ann Yu and her band left the overbearing, and crowded scene of Las Vegas where she had been sharing both her apartment and garage rehearsal space with longstanding friends The Killers, and headed to the haze and fog of San Francisco. It is here that Yu devastatingly brings to life her recurring dream of LoveLikeFire.
Richly compelling and darkly spiritual, LoveLikeFire make the sound of melancholy so beautifully appealing. Borne out of the constant frustration of growing up with her parents refusing to let Yu listen to pop music of any kind, the young artist trained as a classical violinist but yearned for sounds that spoke to her on a more personal, and affecting level.
Those subconscious sounds have stepped dramatically forward with stark reality and huge ambition.
Delicate and melodic, whilst jagged and ferocious, LoveLikeFire's combined edginess with Yu's often reflective delivery (akin to Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval) takes the music of LoveLikeFire to a series of dizzying new levels. LoveLikeFire touch upon that ambitious dynamic of The Killers, and the multi-layered wall of majestic melody much favoured by Arcade Fire, LoveLikeFire are the next band to truly make a difference.
It is the culmination of years of frustration, channelled through the heads and ideals of Yu and her band.
Taken from the band's debut album ‘Tear Ourselves Away’ due out this Summer, 'William' is a tantalising taster into the dreamy, fractured world of Ann Yu and LoveLikeFire.
LoveLikeFire play SXSW, Texas in March.
