What their label says...
“…not unlike the quirky eclectic digging of MF Doom and Madlib, making this producer and label one to watch.... Just don’t tune in if you’re easily offended…” Cyclic Defrost.com "Dope and quirky, Quasimoto takes a walk down Coronation street, proper phat northerners!" DJ Woody (VESTAX, ITF world DJ champion) “Apart from a mint night on the razz, Manchester is still nothing but a place full of scallies and muppets who’ll twist you up for nout other than looking like a gay homo. Walking across these pavements of puke is Chopps Derby - a well hard bumbaseed turn bare sick emcee from Droylsden. Since his cough and drop, he has spent most his time down the dogs, peckin’ heads with his grim tales of sexual healing and his manifestos about getting mashed and that. Though it doesn’t sound like much, Chopps lays down verbal dirt that separates the facts from the lady-boys. This record will probably bring out the worst in you.” ---------------------------------------------------- "Down The Dogs" video: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=X-nzdyBEAEY&fmt=18 "Power Lap" also a must ---------------------------------------------------- THE PRESS… "I was crying when I first watched this [Power Lap video]. This is hilarious…."DJ Semtex (BBC 1xtra) “UK Rap at its very best” Fat Lace Magazine/ 'Dan Greenpeace “The humour is a little strong, so soft Southern nancies beware.” ukhh.com (UK Hip Hop) "– the character is flawless; it beats any Little Britain or Catherine Tate efforts. The five tracks on here are pretty irreverent, but I believe that’s intentional – this is Manchester after all." British hip hop.co.uk THE DEBUT RELEASE The ‘You Don’t KnowWhat Broccoli is?’ EP is probably the ‘wrongest’ thing you’ll ever have the pleasure of listening to. Although this is hip-hop at its most raw, offensive and peculiar, Chopps Derby’s verbal squalor captures something honest about the state of UK hip-hop and northern working-class insolence. TGT Records found Chopps Derby freestyling at Belle Vue greyhound stadium and then later convinced him to record some tracks. It’s safe to say, the results were astounding – the sharp grim nature, and at the same time, hilarity of Chopps’ satirical observations truly need to be heard. Along side his confessional anecdotes of drunken escapades and the loathing he feels toward his wife, references to all things from Top Gear, 80’s cartoon Family-ness, thoughts on Iraq, clothes store Matalan to his creative influences - Fat Joe Da Gansta ( - Chopps Derby even pays tribute to Fat Joe’s ‘The Shit is real’ on ‘The Shite is real’), John Cooper Clarke, the late Bernard Manning and Sam Kinison are thrown into Chopps’ wordplay. All the vocals were recorded in Chopps’ cellar in Droylsden, Manchester. We decided to marry Chopps’ Kitchen Sink style raps with the heavy sample based production courteous of the curious Mofo Snot, who’s twisted funk and generally insane sense of rhythm creates a range of freakout beats that MF Doom and Zappa fans alike should be jealous of. In a recent phone call to Chopps, he told us that he played his music to some old folks at a working men’s club in Ashton-Under-Lyne, and said that most of them were really pissed off. We also asked him why he called himself Chopps Derby, and he replied ‘It’s Chopps because I like pork chops.’ This record is a concept EP and in essence, Chopps Derby represents everything appalling about the north-west of England, but it’s dealt with in such good taste, humour and hip hop finesse that all we can do is dance and be happy.
