...according to our Brian on 27 February 2009.

Joseph Auer is a newish face on the scene with recordings released on Boltfish and possibly else where but importantly, he has a new album out on the progressively important Symbolic Interaction, a spot-on Japanese imprint who've just provided us with one of our albums of the week. Taking it's cues from the Artificial Intelligence series and mellow ambient techno such as Future Sound of London & early B12 style rhythmic flows, 'Freo' is a graceful & well presented record. There's strong touches of the more downtempo Detroit gear, sparkling astral synths, playfully melodic, then you've the moody, funky basslines & graceful drum pads. It's terribly mid 90's in essence but like all the classic sounds from that era, it's like a template for the future, so doesn't sound dated, merely affectionately recalling the halcyon days of such loved favorites such as Orbital (minus the clanky slightly awkward beats that probably annoy folks these days) It's an absorbing ride is this CD, the quality reassuringly high with some class tunes and a lovely chilled vibe. In a nice cardboard foldy thing (thanks Phil...)
