The ambient experimental pop music in The United Colors of Trouble Books drifts along on guitar swells and lopsided loops, with strings and horns wandering past in the tape hiss, only to be pushed out at times by a thick blanket of distortion. TROUBLE BOOKS’ sound has often been described as “dreamlike” and compared to a fuzzy space somewhere between awake and asleep. The images in Keith Freund’s lyrics are just as vivid and unique as the soundscapes they rest in. From a dog in the Soviet space program, to a small-town hardcore punk band, to an Akron street sweeper driver, each short portrait is written with great care and detail. There’s a lot of sounds and melodies to find in The United Colors of Trouble Books, and
a lot to like as well. Beautiful Artwork and 4-Panel Green Wallet
