Hatcham Social have a new single on Fierce Panda produced by Tim Burgees. 'Murder In The Dark' has a silhouette of a big fuck off spider on the sleeve. Spiders scare me. It's all my mam's fault cos when I was a little kid I used to run off from her and to get me to come back she'd shout 'Anthony there's spiders'. Also we had one of those nautical looking glass balls hanging in the bathroom that people had in the 70's. She'd say there was a spider inside that would get me if I didn't get scrubbed properly in the bath. I've just mentioned this to my fellow colleagues who are frankly shocked at such life scarring threats from my own mother. Anyway I'm playing this record for the second time and it's not a bad tune, pretty catchy with a dark edge that recalls some early to mid 80's classic UK alternative type gear. Phil has just spotted the beat is a bit like Kate Bush 'Running Up That Hill'.TRACKLISTING: A) Murder In The Dark, B) Mimicry,
OVERVIEW: Hatcham Social consist of Toby Kidd (vocals / guitar), Finn Kidd (drums), Dave Fineberg (bass / vocals) and multi-tasking new boy Jerome Watson (synth / guitar). In the past two years they have released four limited edition independent singles, compiled one mini-album cassette, played over 150 gigs (including selling out the 100 Club) and enraptured countless music lovers with the sort of charmingly jagged old school alternative stance several of us thought had been destroyed forever by the corporate indie boomtime of the early noughties. Nor are they purely being retro to cut off their own indie schmindie cardigans sleeves: in 2008 alone Hatcham Social visited France, Italy, Spain, Russia, The Netherlands and The Faroe Islands. They toured the UK with The Charlatans and then again with Ipso Facto. They released their 'Crystal World' mini-album in Japan. They shone at the Great Escape by the seaside, at Camden Crawl by the trackside, at In The City near Moss Side and at Offset in the middle of Epping Forest. Oh, and they spent a few weeks in the summer in Big Mushroom Studios up north with Tim Burgess and Jim Spencer at the controls. 'Murder In The Dark' is one of the songs from those Big Mushroom sessions and their first single release on Fierce Panda. Like much of Hatcham Social's understated ouevre it's a deceptively multi-layered musical event wherein sweet melodies disguise a cutting edge. Fact fans may care to note that 'Murder In The Dark' will also be appearing on Hatcham Social's humungously long-awaited debut longplayer, 'You Dig The Tunnel, I'll Hide The Soil', which is due out on Fierce Panda on March 16th 2009.
