Standing Still EP by Artery

4...according to our on Thu 19 Feb, 2009.

Strange release of the week is a new EP by dark Sheffield new-wavers Artery, a band I became rather taken with on release of their last anthology. It's a 4 tracker on the plucky Phantom Power, home to Repomen & Screaming Mimi. The heavily distinctive Artery sound is still reassuringly here, present & correct after so many years dormant, indulging in other projects. The vocals still sound manically Northern, an authoritarian bellow swathed in echo, the guitar still shaves bits of your face when allowed to, the bass still bobs & chatters in a Steve Severin style and the songs still have that hypnotic marching, anthemic quality. 'The Seeds of Youth' is particularly notable for it's familiarity with old favourite 'The Clown'. Oh, and the wonky sounding keyboard is delightfully shit, always totally re-affirming in these hi-tech times of overwrought studio fakery. It's also lovely to see a band throwing out a quality 4 track EP in this hideous multi formatting age! There's plenty o' Artery heads out there that'll be happy as pigs in muck with new material. If you like the gothier end of early 80s overcoat rock ala Death Cult, Chameleons & Siouxsie then give these old dramatists a serious go!

Yes, exciting news indeed. PPR team up with Sheffield post-punk legends Artery to bring you their first original material for nearly 25 years. The four-track "Standing Still" EP is released on Monday 23rd February (PPR010). The track listing is as follows:

1. Standing Still
2. A song for all the lonely people
3. The seeds of youth
4. Who's afraid of David Lynch?
