Alive In the Kitchen/Lazarus by Peggy Sue

Peggy Sue is quite popular, even without her jolly pirates, I bet she'll take some prisoners with this 7" on the largely defunct but plucky Too Pure. Looks like 4AD are completing the singles club subscription and to be honest, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see young Peggy propping up that esteemed roster in the future. This is bloody lovely stuff, stomping boldly along with a swashbuckling sea-shanty folk feel, whilst her swaying, impassioned vocals swoop all over the stew. It's all jingling mandolins and huge sounding marching drums in my head, making little firecrackers of pleasure go "zing" all over the shop. 'Alice in the Kitchen' is truly the best thing i've heard on this sadly dormant stable for yon ks, bursting with life & soul. Phil is reminded of "Beirut" for a change. 'Lazarus' on the flip is more like brooding gothic folk with a slightly medieval twist, before it gets all stomp once again. I think this lady is a proper feisty star in the making and I want to marry her, even if she's got a wooden leg.
