Doubtful Comforts by Blue Roses

4...according to our on Thu 05 Mar, 2009.

'Doubtful Comforts' is Blue Roses' debut single and it's really very nice, setting their stall out as classy contenders for the crown of something or other I don't know I can't be arsed thinking of something imaginative. Set to a twinkling music box backing, all dead minimal and delicate, the falsetto female vocals get across a real sense of sadness and regret without me even needing to make out the lyrics which is just as well since everyone's talking their usual bollocks all over the place while some of us are trying to bloody work. It's like three minutes of sitting in Edward Scissorhands' castle or something but I don't want to think about that 'cos I'll probably cry. It comes on a 7", limited to 500 copies. I like it. It's nice.

Debut single from Blue Roses, available on 7” vinyl single. XFM’s Record Of The Week.

· The last couple of years has seen a plethora of female singersongwriters
take over the charts. So it comes as a relief to discover
that Blue Roses is like no other.
· Having tirelessly worked away in friend’s bedrooms, recording in
churches in her native Yorkshire and borrowing instruments from
local music shops, the first glimpse the word will have of Blue
Roses is ‘Doubtful Comforts,’ a gorgeous, heartfelt plea to a
former love.
· The song itself sees delicate twinkling kalimba give way to a
glorious, lush and symphonic backing and a vocal where Blue
Roses pleads “You’re so good at getting my hopes up / Where they
don’t belong / I can’t reach them”.
· As lead singer Laura explains: “I wanted to create something
that would connect with people emotionally, whether it be a lyric or
a certain chord change or a sound - something that could perhaps
become as important to someone as my favourite records are to
me”
· Vinyl 7” is limited to 500 copies.
· Blue Roses’ self-titled debut album is due to be released
this Spring.
