I feel like i'm not getting enough done nowadays as there seems to be a new Will Oldham related release available every time I leave the house. 'Beware' sees our Bonnie Billy hook up with a bunch of super pro-musician types such as Josh Abrams, Jennifer Hutt, Emmett Kelly and Michael Zerang and a bunch of guests to produce one of his slickest releases for some time. It's the equivalent of Mr. Oldham waking up one morning, walking into Harvey Nichols and buying a new suit straight of the shelf. It may not necessarily be a tailored suit or fit perfectly but it sure as hell looks good so it's hard to judge. As a long time fan of Will Oldham's output i find it hard to enjoy the smoother, Memphis sounding records that he has a tendency to dabble in these days. I can't help but think of Neil Young and the way he'd abandon Crazy Horse to record with a load of session musicians. The records are still great but it just doesn't feel right. I'll be buying this record but i should imagine it'll be stored away with Bonnie prince billy sings Greatest palace music and potentially be forgotten about.......no! That's unfair. I'll keep listening and as usual "bonnie gems" will no doubt rise to the surface. I should also mention the awesome artwork. The artwork is AWESOME!!!Beware’s reach is longer and stronger, more grandiose: Where
fiddle and steel contribute their rustic timbre alongside guitars and
voices, a thickening thud of low tone rolls beneath, giving the
record a bottom that’s fun to watch bounce in new clothes.
