What we say about Robin, by Tunng/ Soy Un Caballo

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Brian feeling ecstatic.

Soy Un Caballo? Who???? you may enquire? Tunng's mates from Belglie, that's who and where. They've a collaborative tour together I believe, and to celebrate this pan-European collection of future folk minds, there's a highly limited split 7" featuring Tunng covering 'Robin' by this duo, pairing it with the original on side 'B'. With Tunng, you know their delicate melodic acoustic plucking, sing-song vocal harmonies & delightfully organic percussion is gonna slay you every bloody time, always gently glazed with a mind-altering coating of fascinating electronics and effects. A lullaby so loveable, it could be their very own! The original is like a modern twist on the 60s euro-psych pop sound, a mellow, swirling groover with beautiful dreamy boy/girl vocals sung in that smooth sexy Gallic way that sends little shivers up your spine and makes you feel a bit sexy, even if you're at a funeral on a really horrid, stormy day and you've just thrown up down your suit. No ice!

What the label says about Robin, by Tunng/ Soy Un Caballo:

They’re one of the most distinctly English-sounding bands around, but the latest single from Tunng sees the London-based band hooking up with some like-minded souls from Belgium, the hotly tipped Soy Un Caballo. Released exclusively on gold 7” vinyl, this extra-special limited single has Tunng’s version of Soy Un Caballo’s Robin on the A-side, with the band’s original version on the flip.

“We met Soy Un Caballo on tour in Belgium and France and ended up drinking wine and swapping numbers,” says Tunng frontman Sam Genders. “We kept in touch and they asked if we'd be up for doing an English version of one of their songs for a seven. I remembered Robin from seeing them play live and it was my favourite.”

Sam translated the song from a rough version that the band sent over, then recorded it at Tunng central in London. It’s fascinating to hear the two treatments – Tunng’s typical fireside warmth, and the Belgians’ delicately trippy original.

Soy Un Caballo (Spanish for “I am a horse”) are a Belgian couple who write and perform songs of exquisite fragility, and record them in Brussels with an amazing line up of musicians such as Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy (Will Oldham), members of Raymondo and producer Sean O’Hagan (The High Llamas). Aurelie Muller and Thomas Van Cottom now release their Soy Un Caballo debut album in North America, titled “Les Heures De Raison”. The band have performed throughout the UK, Belgium, France and Spain and look forward to arriving in the United States this Spring. You may have already caught a glimpse of Soy Un Caballo featured in Blogotheque’s “Take Away Show” or maybe you heard Aurelie’s collaboration with Bright Eye’s Conor Oberst
