Ox, Eagle. Lion. Man - Opus 2: Obscured By A Setting Sun

Opus 2: Obscured By A Setting Sun by Ox, Eagle. Lion. Man

4...according to our on Fri 20 Feb, 2009.

Overwrought is usually a criticism levelled at prog metal bands like Tool but not usually indie acts. Ox Eagle Lion Man are the most OTT band i've heard in a long time, they're strikingly talented, portentous, pretentious, grandiose & exhausting. And quite brilliant. 'Opus 2: Obscured By A Setting Sun' is like System of A Down meets Interpol meets The Cardiacs. All rolled into this hyper-prog bundle of biblical intensity, the guitars are a whirling maelstrom, the drums gallop hysterically, the guy sound like he's shouting from the top of K2 like Nick Cave on steroids.....fuck me, i'm not surprised these guys only seem to do EPs, a full album of this and my head would topple off. Time signatures are not quite as all over the shop as the last one, there's a little more focus to the style they're aiming towards as this is a concept record, steeped in allegory and apocalyptic menace. It's also quite beautiful in places. I've heard iLiKETRAiNS mentioned but these guys just plaster the wall with those maudlin Victorian saps. Blinding. Definitely one for the more adventurous Muse fan.

OVERVIEW: 'Opus 2: Obscured By A Setting Sun' is the follow up to Ox.Eagle.Lion.Man's critically acclaimed 'The Lay of the Land, The Turn of the Tide'. In this 33-minute chapter, the band reaffirm their unique genre defying apocalyptic rock, blending frenetic guitars, powerhouse drums and defying faith questioning lyrics.
