Aaron Martin & Part Timer are the latest suspects lined up to commit music to one of those lovely Mobeer 2x3" sets. Beginning the first disc of 'Seed Collection' is what sounds like a stylophone being caressed by lots of growling waves of computer glitch and earthy crackle whilst possibly a ukelele or bonzai guitar is calmly plucked, the melancholy plucking continuing into track two, this time being assaulted by some reedy whistling and ambient/found sound textures. On 'Darkness Settles Over Jonestown' a rubbery, squeaky run-out groove loop is caught crackling in the full glare of some lovely 2 note accordian sounding thang, sweet, simple & organic. As usual I ain't time to review all the tracks over these two discs but rest assured, there's a homely laptop folk vibe sweating from every pore, spots of neo-classical rubbing shoulders with Southern gothic drama on 'Nureyev', pretty, cyclic instrumental 'Orchard' is just so soothing and the first disc exits with some slightly rusty violin and gentle acoustic arpeggio underpinned with a brooding mist of fine electronic drift 'n' drone. It makes me want to curl up by the fire in a desolate farmhouse by my master's feet with a huge marrowbone in my slavering gob. Disc 2 is basically the same 6 tracks remixed & re-jigged by some smart old duffers, possibly their good selves, I dunno! A real treat from these two, be quick 'cause these always fly out like the hot cakes they are. It's perhaps fitting that we release our latest mobeer over the valentines weekend. That's not to say that it should be considered an opportunistic and overpriced useless trinket, because we try and keep the cost of these things down ( in fact we only ever use the street kids that primark consider suspiciously cheap to assemble the little blighters).
But in the spirit of the season mobeer number 6 is the product of a fitting amount of delicate love between two grown men. It's musical love, and the men in question answer to the names of Aaron martin and John McCaffrey.
You may know Aaron from his work on the excellent preservation label or his collabs with euro workhorse machinefabriek. You may know john as half of the lancashire power duo clickits or more recently ,since his decampment down under, as everyone's fave guitar picking, micro beater part timer.
Anyway to cut to the chase, what you'll get if you decide to part with your hard earned cash and purchase the latest mobeer, is one disc of sumptuous shimmering by Aaron and the other disc the fruits of Mr part timers considered tinkering with the source material.
I suppose we needn't say more. we're pretty sure you'd like to hear it and I think at last count we did 275 of them. usual packaging conceived and assembled by Mr moteer.
enjoy.
